Mate's Betrayal in the Ceremony
Synopsis of Mate's Betrayal in the Ceremony
Chapter 1
"I'm sorry, Elizabeth. I can't make it to the ceremony tonight." Drew's voice carried through the phone with that same distant tone I'd been hearing more often lately. My hand instinctively moved to my swollen belly, where our pup kicked restlessly as if sensing my disappointment.
"But Drew, this is the Thanksgiving Luna wellness ceremony. It's tradition for expectant mothers to attend with their mates." I tried to keep the hurt from my voice, but my wolf whimpered softly in the back of my mind. Eight months pregnant, and I'd been looking forward to this sacred blessing for weeks.
"Pack business came up suddenly. You understand how these things work, Liz. You're strong enough to handle it alone." There was something in his scent when he'd kissed me goodbye this morning—something unfamiliar that made my wolf's hackles rise. But I'd dismissed it as pregnancy hormones making me oversensitive.
"Of course," I said, forcing understanding into my tone. "I'll represent us both well."
After ending the call, I stood before my mirror, adjusting the flowing emerald maternity gown that accentuated my Alpha bloodline grace despite my advanced pregnancy. The fabric draped elegantly over my curves, and the color brought out the gold flecks in my brown eyes. Drew had chosen this dress for me weeks ago, saying it would make me the most beautiful she-wolf at the ceremony. Now, wearing it alone felt like carrying a weight I couldn't name.
The Grand Moon Resort buzzed with elegant energy when I arrived. The air was thick with the mingled scents of different packs and the sacred burning sage that always accompanied Luna ceremonies.
I held my head high, drawing on years of diplomatic training as I navigated the crowd. Several she-wolves nodded respectfully when they recognized me—my reputation as a skilled legal advisor and my Silvermoon Pack heritage commanded respect in these circles. But I couldn't shake the feeling that whispers followed in my wake.
"Isn't that Elizabeth Jensen?" I caught fragments of conversation. "Where's her mate?" "Strange to see her alone at such an advanced stage..."
My wolf bristled protectively, and I placed both hands on my belly, feeling our pup's strong kicks as if they too sensed the tension. The little one had been particularly active today, as though sharing my restless energy.
The blessing ritual began with Elder Luna Margaret calling all expectant mothers to the sacred circle. I took my place among the other she-wolves, most of whom were accompanied by their mates or family members. The isolation stung, but I kept my expression serene and dignified.
"Tonight, we honor the Moon Goddess's greatest gift—new life growing within our pack sisters," Elder Margaret intoned, her voice carrying the weight of centuries of tradition. "Each mother-to-be will receive the sacred moon blessing bracelet, blessed by Luna herself to protect both mother and
