Chapter 6

The town was quiet now. Too quiet.

My muscles ached and my lungs burned, but the silence felt worse than the fights we'd barely survived. Every shadow looked alive, every alley whispered warnings I didn't want to hear. My pack moved around me like ghosts, tense and ready, and I could feel Kaelen's anger simmering beneath the calm face he tried to hold.

Mara stayed close, trembling, whispering soft prayers I couldn't hear but always felt. And Damian was there too. Always there. Silent, sharp, focused, eyes sweeping every ruined doorway. His presence pressed against me, heavy and intense, and even when it made it hard to think, I couldn't stop watching him.

You can't let them break you, he murmured, voice low and dangerous. Not now. Not ever.

I tightened my jaw. I'm not broken. Not yet. But even I could hear the hollowness in my voice. Yesterday's fights had torn into me. Every scream, every close call, every moment where I almost died... none of it had left me untouched. I knew it. He knew it.

Kaelen muttered something about this being a death trap, but I ignored him. Complaining didn't keep anyone alive. Adapting did. And adapting meant making choices I hated - choices I'd carry forever.

We moved toward the center of town, where the empty square gave us a little edge. Open space meant we could see what was coming. But it also meant ambush territory. Every step tightened the knot in my chest.

Then I saw him.

The hybrid alpha stood at the far edge of the square, smiling like he owned us. His reinforcements lingered behind him, moving like shadows inside the fog. Fear spiked sharp through me.

You think you can lead them? he hissed, voice scraping like gravel. You think you can survive me?

I clenched my teeth. I don't think so. I know. The words sounded bold even though doubt twisted inside me.

Damian stepped closer, heat radiating off him, his stare sharp enough to cut. Then prove it.

I wanted to shove him away or yell that I didn't need him. But the truth sat heavy in my bones: I did. Not because I wanted comfort. Not because I wanted safety. But because in the middle of all this chaos, he was the only thing that hadn't fallen apart.

We set up quickly. Kaelen guarded one flank, Mara covered behind, and I took the center. My heartbeat pounded like war drums.

Then the fog shifted.

The attack hit us all at once.

They came fast, shadows slicing through the mist. I swung, dodged, cursed, shouted. Teeth and claws flashed all around. Kaelen dove into the fight, knives flashing. Mara struck where she could, her fear sharpening her movements.

And Damian moved like a storm - silent, fast, deadly.

I hated him for it. Hated how my pulse jumped every time he brushed past me. Hated that my mind drifted toward him when it shouldn't. But I couldn't lie: he was necessary. And that terrified me.

The fight turned chaotic. Minutes and hours twisted together. Buildings became shields, alleys became traps. The hybrid alpha kept appearing and disappearing, striking from nowhere, laughing like this was entertainment. But to us, it was survival.

Then pain sliced across my side. A claw. Sharp, deep. I stumbled and gasped as blood soaked my shirt.

Kaelen cursed. Mara screamed. Damian's growl tore through the fog as he slammed the attacker away from me.

You can't escape me, Lyra, the alpha hissed. And soon... you'll belong to me.

My blood froze. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to fight, to do anything but stand still.

Kaelen snarled. Mara whimpered. Damian's icy eyes locked onto mine.

I won't let him take you, he growled. His voice was low and rough as he grabbed my hand - strong, steady, unshakable.

My pulse thundered. My nerves lit up. I didn't want to admit what I felt, not now, not here - but the truth was undeniable.

The hybrid alpha lunged.

Everything exploded.

Claws. Teeth. Metal smashing bone. Screams tearing through the fog. Mara cried out. Kaelen fought like he was possessed. I swung with everything I had because I had no other choice.

Damian stayed glued to my side, deadly and focused, checking on me even in the chaos. Grounding me. Pushing me. Challenging me.

Then the alpha appeared again, smiling wide, teeth gleaming. He leapt at me.

Damian intercepted him with brutal force, throwing him across the square. Stay with me! he shouted.

This time, without thinking, I did.

My pack fought around us like a storm. We gained inches. Lost feet. Survived by luck and grit.

Then I saw it - movement at the far side of the square. Someone tall, broad, walking with purpose. Not a hybrid. Human. Controlled. Calm. Watching us like we were pieces on a board.

My stomach twisted.

This wasn't just survival anymore. Not just hybrids. Not just fog or screams or blood.

This was politics. Secrets. Betrayal.

The figure stepped into the open, voice carrying clear through the chaos. Lyra. You're playing a dangerous game. And some of your allies... are not what they look like.

I froze. My heart pounded hard against my ribs. Kaelen hissed. Mara whimpered. Damian's grip tightened around my hand.

And a cold truth settled over me.

The fight for survival was only the beginning. The real war was just getting started.
